The most iconic pirate imagery comes from the Golden Age of Piracy, roughly 1650–1730. During this era, Atlantic and Caribbean sea lanes carried vast wealth—silver, sugar, tobacco, rum and colonial goods—creating tempting targets and opportunities far from strict naval control.
Piracy grew from a mix of factors: imperial wars, privateering (state-sanctioned raids against enemy shipping), unemployment among sailors after wars ended, and weak enforcement on distant routes. Many sailors who once served as privateers continued raiding illegally when commissions expired.
Crews often followed a strict onboard code: shares of loot, battle discipline, and penalties for betrayal. Weapons and gear reflect late 17th–early 18th century reality: flintlock pistols and muskets, cutlasses/hangers, boarding axes and daggers, with practical clothing—waistcoats, sashes, headscarves, sea jackets—sometimes mixed with captured garments. This period is perfect for recognizable, historically grounded pirate miniatures.
