Kyivan/Kievan Rus’ emerged in the late 9th century as the first major East Slavic state and a network of principalities, shaped by powerful cities and long-distance trade connecting Northern Europe and Byzantium. Early ruling elites are closely associated with the Rurikid tradition and Varangian influence.
